Mont Saint-Michel: A Breathtaking Wonder of History and Nature

Mont Saint-Michel: A Breathtaking Wonder of History and Nature

Is Mont Saint-Michel a miracle or a mirage? This unforgettable day trip will have you wondering.

The first sanctuary was built by Saint Aubert, Bishop of Avranches, in 708 A.D., transforming the island into a Christian pilgrimage site. Over the centuries, the sanctuary expanded into the Abbey that stands today, unmatched in its grandeur. From the medieval town walls, which were built to protect the island from invaders, you’ll be treated to magnificent views of the bay and surrounding salt marshes.

The island’s incredible tides, the second highest in the world (after the Bay of Fundy in Canada), sweep over the causeway twice a day, adding to the site’s mystique. Wander through the narrow, winding cobblestone streets of this medieval town, where hidden treasures await around every corner.

Stop by the souvenir shops or savor one of Mère Poulard’s famous omelettes, or dine at one of the other charming restaurants or brasseries. With 2.5 million visitors per year, Mont Saint-Michel is considered Normandy’s most spectacular spot, a true 7th Wonder of the World in the eyes of the Normans.
