Marseille is enriched by its 2,600-year-old history. Passing through the hands of the Romans, the Visigoths and the Francs, it reigned in the region for centuries before its power waned in the Middle-Ages, only to regain its former glory after the French Revolution. Since the end of the 20th century, the city has been booming once again.
Marseille remains a crossroads between the civilizations of Europe and North Africa, which lies just across the sea. It is a city of art and history, and in 2013 it welcomed more than 10 million visitors as the European Capital of Culture. It was also voted European City of 2014.
